I think the only part of this movie that I somewhat enjoyed was the opening scene. From the beginning, you already know that this is going to be from the perspective of a woman who is romanticizing the abusive relationship she is in and how she is dependent and controlled by the man. An issue I have with this film is that it seems like the primary inspiration for it is coquette/nymphet/morute tumblr blogs. If you were to spend a couple hours looking through the morute tag on tumblr and then make a film about it, this would be the result. Things like the man shoving his fingers in her mouth, the juxtaposition of a cute pink aesthetic with razor blades and vomit, and her licking the blood from cuts he made on her. I’m also someone who hates spit, gagging, and vomiting in films and those are the main sort of “shock” factors here. Oh yes, another scene where the actress gags on his fingers. How fun. Do we really need to be doing this again? The entire thing has an undertone of “I love my abusive older boyfriend.” Like I said, very tumblr-esque.
The film does get a bit more interesting about halfway through when the cute, romanticized (well, as romanticized as it can be) facade of their relationship fades and there are more visceral scenes of the man’s abuse. One that really stood out to me was the sight of her at dinner, wearing a fancy dress while covered in bruises with her head shaved. I see these parts as the only sort of storyline in this film. Most of the first half is just various scenes of the woman getting groped, showing off her body, gagging on the fingers of both herself and the man, with some lame attempt at poetry being read by a narrator on top of it all. On paper, it seems like something I would enjoy, but I just didn't. If the cinematography was better I'd probably feel differently.
This film is less than an hour long, and I’d only recommend it if this sounds like anything you’d be interested in.
